Fat loss is such a huge topic and an area of real confusion in our currently landscape. Do eat carbs, don't eat carbs, fasting and HIIT? It can all get a bit much and people end up frozen by the conflicting sources. The thing with getting leaner is that our eating habits have stayed the same as if we were living 100 years ago when we had manual jobs and were way more active, it’s now time to change these habits and I hope this article helps.

Having helped hundreds of clients completely transform there bodies, we have a really deep understanding of the fundamentals that need to happen to make sustainable changes. One key hack to getting lean is to change your habits and what I like to call the set up. Get your set up right and the rest will follow. The first part of the set up I like to look at is establishing the ultimate reason behind what you want to do or want to achieve, this is one of the most important things you could start implementing right now. Just loosing weight or just to get lean isn’t very tangible or measurable, compared to ‘I have to to be x weight to improve my running time on the 5k race I have booked in a months time’.

Humans are very purposeful creatures, we are driven by desired outcomes. Dan Pinks book ‘drive’ highlights this with the three pillars of human motivation, autonomy, mastery and purpose. Sport is exercise with a purpose and so is a great place to start. With a strong reason why, you won't be left with a weak willpower to stay in shape.

Fat loss never stops, it is an on going process so having a challenge or event each year is a sustainable way to achieve your goals. I see so many people get motivated start a new program and fall off 6 weeks later because motivation is gone. Motivation comes and goes, commitment to sport and yearly sporting habit will keep you locked in training and good nutrition for the rest of your life. 

Plus the great thing about it is so much of the judgement of food will be taken away. As an athlete I know that I can get away with the weekly treat because I have earned it and that allows me to find the balance.

Action points 

Start with a reason why. What sports events do you have coming up this year that can hack yourself into doing, ideally something you enjoy. It doesn't have to be huge, but just pick something. Then you have something to aim at and that is half the battle.

Once you have that locked in that creates the reason why then you can get to work on the other elements of fat loss.

The reason this is sustainable because once you have completed your event, have some down time, reset and pick another. Its like brushing your teeth, you have to keep doing forever.

Our fighting against millions of years of evolution, there is something to be said for it, so adapt and learn a new way to play the game. Your have to make a change to get one. Make this a new habit, hack yourself, make yourself do it, your a human being, so get being.
